Slash-Digg,Reddit, Asymmetrical Media
>
Slashdot opines on the new 'Silicon Valley' bratpack. You'll notice that these companies are not the chip, personal computer, database, hard drive, application software, or search engine of years past but generally impact how users relate to media. Sifting, repurposing, and exposing the palimpsest of digital existence. Slashdot quotes BusinessWeek, which probably was just reading blogs to come up with story ideas, or reading articles about digg...the writing is in the breathless tone of the outsider... however, things like reddit are more asymmetrical than digg, which is kind of a rehash "un-Cola" of slashdot
However this time around the technology and capital is a lot more decentralized and you don't really see the relevancy, by and large of Silicon Valley, which didn't get myspace, except for a couple of people with ad backgrounds. Connected people, yes, but proximity in just one area no. The financing structure also is not that relevant as companies can't and shouldn't consume the 'get big fast' wheaties of years past. Creating something that doesn't exist yet and filling a gap between the offerings of media companies, the sclerotic industry (take your pick: e.g.,healthcare) value chain, and giving people something they can say "wow, that's cool' about that and leapfrogs what they do now is where it's at. People don't really know how good things can be, so by all means air it out, throw for the end zone and forget incrementalism.
